Prokaryote HSP70 Genes

Laurence A. Moran and Blerta Kolaj

Prokaryotic HSP70 gene sequences are mostly organized according to the taxonomy of Margulis and Schwartz (1998). The NCBI classification is noted as alternative (alt.). There are many other possible classifications. Some prokaryotes have a separate page that can be reached by clicking on the species name (for example, E. coli). In most cases you can view a complete GenBank nucleotide sequence record by clicking on the accession number. The HSP70 protein ID is shown when the nucleotide sequence record contains multiple genes. Where there are multiple independent records of the same gene the most accurate and complete sequence is indicated by a red asterisk. Conflicts are often noted in SwissProt/UniProt entries. The HSP70 Sequence Database doesn't always agree with the decisions made by SwissProt annotators.

Gene ID numbers are listed whenever possible, with a link to EntrezGene. In some cases, there are multiple sequence records for the same gene but these records are not all referenced in the EntrezGene entry. Those sequence records are listed separately. In other cases, the EntrezGene entry is complete and individual nucleotide sequence files may not be listed on this page. They can be found at the bottom of the EntrezGene webpage. RefSeq records (i.e., those beginning with NC, NP, XC, and XP) are not shown if there is a known EntrezGene link for that particular gene. In the absence of an EntrezGene record the RefSeq file will be listed.

Most bacterial genes are orthologous to the dnaK gene that was first identified in E. coli. These genes should be named "dnaK" but this isn't always the case. There are multiple copies of dnaK genes in some species of cyanobacteria. These are named dnaK1, dnaK2 and dnaK3. There are other members of the HSP70 gene family in bacteria. The hscA gene is found in E. coli and Haemophilus influenzae and some other members of the gamma subdivision of Proteobacteia. It is also called hsc70 and hsc66. The E. coli genome contains a third member of the HSP70 family called hsc62. Distantly related members of the family are found in the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi (dnaK-1) and in the proteobacterium Myxococcus xanthus (sglK).

Note that the phylogeny of HSP70 genes does not agree with the taxonomic classification used by NCBI. The most important difference is that the archaebacterial dnaK genes are closely related to those of the Gram Positive group and do not form a separate Archaea domain.
